The Victorians christened the twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth ‘The little Switzerland of England’ because of the romantic scenery. In more recent times the villages have become known as the place where ‘Exmoor meets the sea’. Woodlands is situated midway between these villages in the Exmoor National Park and is an ideal base for exploring the spectacular coastline and the wild expanses of Exmoor.
The dramatic countryside combines deep wooded river valleys, wild moorland and a magnificent coastline of hog-backed cliffs. Exmoor is home to a wealth of wildlife including red-deer, ponies, buzzards, trout and salmon. There are even wild goats in the Valley of the Rocks.
There are 680 miles of footpaths and bridleways and which offers superb walking from gentle strolls to strenuous hikes. Many of these walks are accessible by foot from our guesthouse.
Horse riding, mountain biking, fishing, sailing and bird watching are all available close by. Lorna Doone country is close to Lynton and slightly further afield there are historic houses, picturesque villages, gardens, golf courses and sandy beaches. Lynton is a friendly village with tea-rooms, restaurants, pubs, churches, shops and a museum. The famous cliff railway links the two villages of Lynton and Lynmouth and is a novel way of getting from one to the other.
